「思想としてのパソコン」 西垣通

コンピュータ史上における重要な論文をいくつか翻訳したアンソロジー。現代のＰＣというものが、どのような背景で生まれてきたかに焦点を当てて並べている。

もともとコンピュータの開発は、計算機械（computationするもの）として始まる。それから、人間のように思考するもの（AI, artificial intelligence）を目指して開発することが主流になったが、AIは現実的にも、（人によっては）理論的にもうまくいかないというムードが出てきて、IA, intelligence amplifier（思考を増幅・拡張するもの）として開発されるのが主流になった、と。今のＰＣは基本的ににIAサイドの考え方をベースにしている。このあたりの紆余曲折した流れが面白い。

ＰＣという機械が、どのような思想や考え方に支えられているかを解説したもので、文系的なものと言えるだろう。ＰＣというと、なかなか機械慣れしていない自分には、やや近寄りがたいものもあるのだが、ワークステーションという中央集権装置に対する、民主化の象徴として西海岸の人が捉えている部分もあるとか、機械と人間を「融合」させるようなイメージでＧＵＩが創られてきたなどの話を聞くと、とても人間くさいものに思えてくる。現代の象徴のようなＰＣであるが、やはり人間くさい歴史を背負っているのだなぁと感慨。関係ないが、「鉄腕アトム」は、機械を通じることで遠まわしに人間とは何かを追求した人文主義であった。

ただ学者っぽい文章や訳文が読みづらい。

とはいえ、時代はもはやポストＰＣであり、ネット関係の論文のアンソロジーが欲しいところ。
